Escapement

More complex than the geartrain is the escapement, which acts as the bridge between the gears and the balance. For this, not only did I have to master the same basics of endshake, division, etc. as before, but also new complications introduced by the pallet fork. On one end, the guard pin and horns need to be positioned perfectly to protect against shock while allowing the balance to spin freely. On the other, the depths of the pallet jewels need to be adjusted to act with minimal total lock (the distance back along the locking plane of the jewel the escape tooth sits when at rest) without risk of mislocking (the escape tooth missing the locking plane and hitting the impulse plane of the jewel directly).

My ability to adjust and clean these components was tested under a time limit, and succeeded with near-perfect marks.
