Brass Truing Guide

A flat rectangle made of brass, shaped with a cutout and sharp points to be used to help gauge the flatness of wheels, finished with a course straight-grain.

The first project I made for my courses. By this point, I had become comfortable filing the square outer edges, but the interior corners were a different story. I remember spending the day trying to get them as sharp as I could. When I thought I couldn't make them any better, I showed them to my instructor only for him to say "Yeah..... I would give this a 4 [out of 6, barely passing]". But I kept trying, learned some new techniques, and I got better. And that is still often the case: my first attempt doesn't meet my own standards, but with some more effort and ingenuity I get better.
